"App Not Installed"? Fixing Common APK Installation Errors
Step-by-step fixes for the most common Android installation problems: "App not installed", "There was a problem parsing the package", blocked installs and storage errors.
Installing an app from outside Google Play sometimes fails with a vague message. Most of these errors have simple causes. Work through the fixes below in order.
"App not installed"
- An older version is already installed and was signed differently (for example, a copy from another website). Uninstall the existing app first, then install again. Note that this deletes the app's local data.
- Not enough storage. Free up at least twice the APK's size: Android needs space to unpack it.
- The download was incomplete. Delete the file and download it again over a stable connection.
- Incompatible device. The app may require a newer Android version or a different processor type (for example arm64-only apps on older phones).
"There was a problem parsing the package"
This usually means the file is damaged, incomplete or not built for your Android version. Download the file again from the official source and check that its size matches what the developer states. If the error persists, your Android version is probably too old for the app.
"For your security, your phone is not allowed to install unknown apps"
Android blocks sideloading by default. Tap Settings in the warning and allow installs from the app you used to download the file (usually your browser or file manager). Switch the permission off again once installation is finished.
"Blocked by Play Protect"
Play Protect has flagged the app as potentially harmful or unknown. Do not simply tap "Install anyway". First make sure you downloaded the genuine file from the developer's official website. If the warning says the app is harmful, do not install it.
The app installs but closes immediately
- Restart your phone and try again.
- Clear the app's cache: Settings → Apps → [app] → Storage → Clear cache.
- Check that the date and time on your phone are set automatically: wrong time settings break secure connections.
- Turn off battery savers or "app killers" for that app.
OTP or login not arriving
Check that you entered the correct mobile number, that you are not blocking SMS from unknown senders, and wait a couple of minutes before requesting a new code. Never share an OTP with anyone who contacts you claiming to be from the app's support.
Still not working?
Contact the app's official support channel with your Android version and phone model. If an app can only be installed by disabling multiple security features, consider that a reason not to install it at all.
